LEADER is an acronym for
Liaison Entre Actions de Developpement de L'Economie Rurale
Links between actions for the development of the rural economy
LEADER is a European Union and Scottish Government funded Programme supporting innovative and sustainable local rural development projects that promote economic and community development in rural areas.
LEADER is part of the wider Scottish Rural Development Programme (SRDP) a £1.6 billion programme of economic, environmental, and social measures designed to develop rural Scotland up to and including the year 2013.

LEADER aims to increase the capacity of local rural community and business networks by building knowledge and skills, encouraging innovation and co-operation.
LEADER focuses on supporting small-scale community driven projects that tackle local development objectives and benefit the community.
The basic principles of LEADER are;

- equal opportunities
- sustainable development
- sharing lessons learned and working with other areas.
Rural Tayside LEADER has a total budget of 5 million - the LEADER Scottish Government contribution is 2 million and 3 million match funding comes from local partners and applicant organisations.
The LEADER programme in Rural Tayside is focused on :
- generating a diverse and sustainable rural economy and supporting entrepreneurial activities
- supporting local groups to develop stronger and more inclusive communities
- enhancing the natural and cultural heritage of the area
